GWE Water Detritiation

GWE Water Detritiation is a patent-pending electrochemical approach to recovering tritium from water, building on peer-reviewed research.

The problem

Tritiated water arises in fusion plants, heavy-water fission reactors and tritium-handling facilities. Removing tritium from water lets facilities recover a valuable radionuclide and reduce radioactive discharges.

GWE's approach

GWE is developing an electrochemical water detritiation platform. It builds on peer-reviewed PEM electrolysis research for hydrogen isotope recovery co-authored by GWE staff and published in Fusion Science and Technology (2008). See the published research.

What modeling shows

  • ~10⁴Modeled reduction in tritium concentration from feed to product in light water, in the range of conventional systems.
  • Liters, not tonnesModeled tritiated water held in process equipment, compared with the tonnes held by conventional exchange columns at plant scale.

These are model results from GWE and have not yet been measured.

Status

Patent pending.

GWE presented this work at the DOE Tritium Focus Group in October 2026.

GWE is seeking development partners and funded demonstrations.
